New @ I Dream Elephants: Michiko and Me

Japanese children’s fashion has always fascinated us at I Dream Elephants. We were even more excited when we found out about Michiko and Me – a unique British brand, which is Far East-inspired to the core. The majority of outfits are for girls, like the extravagant kimono dresses and tops. Designer Nicky Lumb is, however, also constantly expanding the baby and boy‘s collections. We had the pleasure to talk to her about her gorgeous kid’s outfits made to exceptional standards with the finest, enchanting Liberty prints.

Nicky, what's the idea behind Michiko and Me?
The idea is all about growing with me. everything I design is meant to last - not one season, but six, seven, eight ....

Where does the Japanese influence come from?
A chance conversation in a Brighton Park with another mum about Japan sparked the idea of the kimono dress. And the brand grew from there ...  I chose the name Michiko  because it means 'beautiful wise child' and that seems to sum up the child I was designing for.

What is special about Japanese kids clothes?
Like Brits, Japanese kids have a brilliant way of combining clothes to create a very eclectic yet cool look. And the part of Japanese fashion that I have been inspired by retains an essential innocence - there isn't much skin on display, the clothes are stylish but very wearable.

How do you dress privately?

Skinny jeans, ballet flats and a top from Comptoir des Cotonniers, Cos or Anthropologie. I love texture though with two very young children, practicality is key!

What about boys? Will you offer a boy's collection in the future?
We have a a gorgeous new shirt with some lovely detailing which will be available in the autumn. We also have some limited edition baby boy items like bibs and baby kimono tops. We are always happy to listen to suggestions!
